Life usually works out the way it’s supposed to.
When Gary calls, just say yes and know that life is about to change.
Chapter 8
Sideline Racism
When I got back to New York City, I picked up exactly where I’d left off with my friendships. On the bright side, six months wasn’t too much time to be away, so I still had many of my friends back in the city. It was as if I’d never left.
The best way to heal a broken heart is to fill it with love. And that’s exactly what I did. On my first night back in New York, Lisa Diamond, a friend and one of my college roommates, invited me out to an event she was hosting. Having a place to go that night really helped save me from homesickness, as well as the heartbreak from which I was still reeling. (I’m pretty sure I cried the whole commute to and from the event.) But having laughs and smiles in between, thanks to Lisa, really helped ensure that my spirits were lifted as my New York City 2.0 chapter began.
That Monday, I started work at RISE.
RISE had the commissioner of every major professional sports league on its board and became the first organization to unite all the sports leagues for one cause. Talk about a shooting star of a dream job! The nonprofit also had every major news outlet on its board, as well as an advisory board of many of the top athletes across the sports world.
What I realized the minute I landed this job was that my passion was more than just sports. My heart was at the intersection of sports and making the world a better place, which Gary probably knew when he recommended me for the role. I was very motivated by the mission as I began my endeavor as RISE’s first digital media manager. I was in charge of anything that happened with RISE and the Internet; so I oversaw the website, which we were still building at the time, as well as the social media accounts.
There’s no doubt that trying to use the power of social media to eradicate racism was my greatest challenge yet.
This was my first job where there was no precedent. I couldn’t turn to Johnny and say, “What did you do to get the message out about racial inequality in one hundred forty characters?” The task was on my shoulders. But it also presented an opportunity that I constantly reminded our team about: because we were one of the first organizations solely tackling this mission, we were leaders in this space. Everyone would be looking to us to take a stand and be the guides for how to react to and handle situations, as well as how to navigate this complicated issue.
My time at RISE coincided with the 2016 election, when Trump took office. No matter your political views, the election created a great divide in our country. While so many people went to work the next
